The climate at Craters of the Moon exhibits hot summers and cold winters. During February, the average snow depth varies from 26 inches on the north end of the monument to only 2 inches on the south end. The scorching summer sun heats up the black lava, resulting in surface temperatures of 170°F and air temperatures in the 90s. Dry winds are common, particularly in the afternoon, and can reach speeds of 15 to 30 miles per hour.
